 Archdiocese Local Clergy & Sunday School Teachers Retreat
On Saturday, March 19th the Archdiocese held a Clergy and Sunday School Retreat at St. Elias Church. These retreats are held twice a year where His Eminence Archbishop Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan, the clergy, and Sunday School teachers meet and discuss religious doctrines. They are a way of means to strengthen the religious education of the teachers, and create resources for them to use in the classroom. The churches that were represented were: St. Ephraim, St. George, St. Mary’s, St. Julian, St. Paul, St. Elias, and St. Peter (both clergy and teachers present).

The meeting was presided by His Eminence Archbishop Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan, and attending clergy were: Very Rev. Fr. AbdalAhad Shara, Rev. Fr. George Touma, Rev. Fr. Louis Yacoub, Rev. Fr. Yusuf Kallo, Rev. Fr. Ephrem Adde, Rev. Fr. Mtanous Askar, Rev. Fr. Peter Rouboz, Rev. Fr. John Saif, and Rev. Fr. Fadi Yousif.
Attending teachers were: Patricia Allaf, Charles Askar, Carol Adde, Amalie Greer, Rania Habhab, Sylvie Alberre, Jennifer Salhab, Chris Asmar, Sophia Allaf, Gabriel Shahin, Arveg Hanna, Khawla Yaqub, Mina Wadie, Nancy Acar, Roula Abaci, Irin Simon, Elizabeth Mourad, Tarek Karam, and Nadeen Rouboz.
This retreat focused on the Sacraments of the Holy Chrism and the Holy Eucharist. The meeting began with prayers led by His Eminence, followed by all clergy and teachers welcoming one another. Patricia Allaf then spoke and presented a PowerPoint about some upcoming Archdiocese events such as: the Annual Camp, the national US and Canada Conference in New Jersey in May 2011, and the completion of the Ceremonial Communion Booklet for all churches. Very Rev. Fr. Abdalahad Shara then led the meeting speaking on the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and the Holy Chrism. Throughout the presentation several questions were asked and His Eminence took the time to provide an in-depth explanation. It was a very fruitful and informative session.
Lunch was then served for all attendees, and it was graciously donated by St. Elias Church. After lunch the clergy and teachers met separately, each having their own agenda topics.
The Clergy meeting began with an Opening prayer and a
reading from the epistle of St. James Ch. 2: 1-37.
His Eminence commented on the reading, and then welcomed all the
clergy. His Eminence then gave some spiritual and administrative
advice stating the important role which a priest plays in the life of
the community. He stressed that a priest should love his church and
members of his parish, be obedient to his superiors and to keep the
secrets of those who confess in front of him.
The meeting then commenced with the agenda topics. Among the the topic
was regarding a letter sent by His Holiness concerning the
establishment of a seminary in the USA and Europe. This was at the
request of Dr. Aho Shemonkasho, who is an assistant professor at the
University of Salzburg. A delegation of three Bishops was appointed to
further research the matter. After the Bishops and committee
delegation met, a unanimous decision was taken to open a Syriac
Seminary in Europe and the USA which would teach Syriac, theology, and
music. Further meetings and information will be provided in the
future.
Another topic was a decision made by His Eminence to elevate Fr.
George Touma to be an Archpriest (Khoory). His Holiness Mor Ignatius
Zakka I Iwas approved this decision and all the clergy were elated
with the news of this special ordination.
The meeting concluded with final remarks and prayers made by His
Eminence.
In the Sunday School meeting Patricia Allaf presented booklets to all the teachers. The booklet was entitled “Back to the Basics” which included some of the basic doctrines of the church: history, the Holy Bible, saints, prayers, etc. The teachers then were engaged in an Assessment, in which they tested their own knowledge on various theological topics. Teachers also spoke about Camp preparations, and a Beach Day in late summer.
The meeting concluded with closing prayers led by His Eminence. We extend our gratitude to St. Elias Church for hosting the retreat. The next Clergy and Sunday School Retreat will be held in New Jersey in May 2011 and the theme will be “Servitude; Sunday School Teachers Serving Our Lord.”
الاجتماع الثالث لكهنة الكنائس المحلية لابرشية غربي الولايات المتحدة مع
الرياضة الروحية لمعلمي المدارس الاحدية

وفي العاشرة صباحا وبرعاية صاحب النيافة مار اقليميس اوكين عُقدت الندوة
الروحية التي جمعت كهنة الكنائس المحلية للابرشية اضافةً الى معلمي
ومعلمات المدارس الاحدية. واستضافت كنيسة مار الياس هذا اللقاء الروحي.
وكانت السيدة باتريشيا علاف المديرة العامة لمدارس الاحد للكنائس
السريانية في الولايات المتحدة والمسؤولة عن برامجها وتنظيمها قد هيأت
كراسا خاصا اعدته لبرنامج هذا اليوم الروحي.
إفتتح هذه الرياضة الروحية نيافة الحبر الجليل بصلاة خاصة داعيا الرب
يسوع لتكون يمينه المباركة على المجتمعين ويرشدهم الى قرارات صائبة تعود
بالخير لابناء الكنيسة ولقد باشرت فورا السيدة علاف هذا الاجتماع بشرح
مشاريع مستقبلية للمدارس في الابرشية وتطرقت الى المؤتمر السنوي الذي
سيُعقد لاحقا في ابرشية شرقي الولايات المتحدة لجميع ممثلي المدارس
الاحدية في الولايات المتحدة وكندا. علماً انه كان قد حضر ايضا بعضٌ من
معلمي ومعلمات المدارس الاحدية في الكنائس المحلية للابرشية ومنهم:
السيدة باتريشيا علاف المديرة المنفِذة وكل من: تشارلز عسكر، كارول عدي،
امالي غرير، رانيا هبهب، سيلفيا البير، جينيفر سلهب، كريس اسمر،
صوفياعلاف، كبرييل شاهين، ارفيج حنا، خولى يعقوب، مينا وديع، نانسي اكار،
رولا عباسي، ايرين سيمون، اليزابيث مراد، طارق كرم، و نادين ربوز.
كان الموضوع الاساسي لهذه الندوة الروحية هو سرَي الميرون والقربان
المقدس. ولقد ابتدأ نيافته الندوة بصلاةٍ خاصة، ثم تبادل الاباء الكهنة
والمعلمين كلمات الترحيب والدعاء لبعضهم البعض. وهنا تحدثت السيدة علاف
مؤكدة اهم الاحداث الكنسية القادمة ومنها المخيم السنوي، المؤتمر السنوي
العام للولايات المتحدة وكندا في أيار 2001، واخيرا الانتهاء من تحضير
كراس المناولة الاحتفالية لكل كنائس الابرشية.
وهنا بدأ الاب الخوري عبدالاحد شارا في تقديم محاضرته عن موضوعَي سرَي
الميرون والقربان المقدس، هذا وأُلقيت عدة اسئلة من الحضور عن هذَين
الموضوعَين الهامَين أجاب عنها نيافته بعمقٍ لاهوتي. ولقد كانت مناظرة
قيمة ومثمرة.
وهنا قدمت الكنيسة المضيفة طعام الغداء (اللذيذ والذي استحق شكر الجميع)
وبعده مباشرة بدأ كهنة الابرشية اجتماعهم الشهري بينما تابع المسؤولون عن
المدارس الاحدية اجتماعهم. ولقد حضر كل من الآباء: الخوري عبدالاحد شارا،
القس جورج توما، القس لويس يعقوب، القس يوسف كلو، القس افرام عدي، القس
مطانس عسكر، القس بطرس روبز، القس جان سيف، والقس فادي يوسف.
ولقد طلب نيافته من الاب لويس يعقوب قراءة الفصل المخصص من الانجيل
المقدس وكان من رسالة يعقوب الاصحاح 1:2-37. ولقد شرح نيافته معاني هذا
الفصل مؤكداً على الدور الهام الذي يجب ان يلعبه الكاهن في حياة المؤمنين
وعلى ضرورة ان يظهر الكاهن محبته لابناء الكنيسة بالخدمة الصادقة
بالاضافة الى الطاعة الكاملة لرؤسائه، ثم رحب نيافته بالاباء الكهنة
وتناول نيافته بعدئذٍ بنود جدول الاعمال. ثم اعلن نيافته استلامه
لرسالتين من قداسة الحبر الاعظم مار اغناطيوس زكا الاول عيواص تتضمن
الاولى موضوع تأسيس اكليريكيتين في كلٍ من اوروبا والولايات المتحدة
بمساعدة الدكتور آحو شمعون قاشو المساعد للبروفسور في جامعة سالسبورغ –
المانيا ولقد عين قداسته لجنة اسقفية من ثلاثة مطارنة للبحث التفصيلي
بموضوع الاكليريكتين ولقد تقرر أن تُدرِّس هاتين الاكليريكتين اللغة
السريانية، اللاهوت، والموسيقى على ان تُدرَس مواضيع اخرى تتعلق بهذا
المشروع الحيوي.
كما واستلم نيافته رسالة أخرى من قداسته تتعلق بطَلَب نيافته ترقية الاب
القس جورج توما كاهن رعية كنيسة السيدة العذراء الى رتبة( خوري) على ان
يُحدَد موعد الرسامة لاحقاً حسب رغبة أبوته. ولقد هنأ الاباء الكهنة
جميعا أبوته بهذه الترقية التي جاءت تقديرا لخدمات ابوته الروحية
الكنسيىة منها والاجتماعية. وهنا اعلن نيافته انتهاء الاجتماع بصلاة شكرٍ
للرب يسوع المسيح.
إجتماع المدرسة الاحدية:
قدمت السيدة باتريشيا علاف كراسا خاصا لمساعدة المعلمين. وعنونت هذا
الكراس بـ " العودة الى الاصول" ويتضمن عقائد الكنيسة الاساسية:
التاريخ، الكتاب المقدس، القديسين، صلوات ومواضيع أخرى. وهنا كانت
مداخلات للمعلمين لتقدير مستوى معلوماتهم عن مواضيع لاهوتية سابقة. وتحدث
المعلمين عن التحضيرات للمخيم القادم واليوم الصيفي على شاطيء البحر في
الصيف.
