The Christmas Fast

The history of establishing this fast goes back before the Fourth century AD. We realize it through poems of St. Ephraim the Syriac (+373), hymns and songs which he composed in the Fourth century. This fast is practiced as a preparation to welcome the feast of the birth of the Lord in flesh, and in remembrance of our state before this birth: Sorrowful sin, darkness of ignorance, devil's bondage, and the humiliation of humanity awaiting salvation. So the Savior was born and He redeemed us through His incarnation. We practice this fast to purify our souls and bodies so we may be worthy to welcome the holy occasion of the birth of the Redeemer, the Incarnate Word of God, same as Moses fasted before receiving the written word of God, the law of the Old Testament.

The number of days was formerly Forty but the church decreased it to Twenty Five days. Then in 1946 and according to Homs’ Synod, His Holiness the late Patriarch Ephraim I Barsoum shortened the days to Ten starting on December 15th and ending on the Holy Christmas Day which is the 25th of December.
