Mor Gabriel Monastery Loses Forestry Case |
Mor Gabriel
Monastery
loses Forestry Case

Midyat,
Turkey, Wednesday 24 June, 2009 –
Midyat, Turkey – In an astonishing verdict, the
Syriac Universal Alliance (SUA), a recognized NGO at the United
Nations that represents the Aramean (Syriac) people worldwide,
reports that the court trial held today on Wednesday, June 24
2009, in Midyat,Turkey, has resulted in a lose of the “Forestry
Case” by the Saint (Mor) Gabriel Monastery. However, in another
puzzling decision, the Court also ruled today in favor of the
Monastery on the “Treasury” Case.
The Midyat Court decided as follows:
• The Monastery has lost its appeal against the
earlier decision of the Forestry Department which claimed
ownership over some 34 Hectares of Land from the Monastery
(“Forestry Case”). The Court decided that the Forestry
Department, on behalf of the Turkish State Government, owns the
land and now has completed is cretion over what it will do with
the land;
• The case involving the Head of the Religious
Foundation of the Monastery, Mr. Kuryakos Ergün,
as a defendant, for the “intentional violation of the Forestry
law”, has been postponed to 30 September, 2009; and
• The Turkish State Treasury Department has lost
its case against the Monastery claiming the 12 Parcels of land
inside and outside the wall of the Monastery, amounting to some
24 Hectares of Land.
In the Forestry Case, the Judge proclaimed that
the State considers the land as a “forest” and therefore by
definition it has become “Forestry” land owned by the State. The
result of the case has deeply troubled the Monastery, with
Kuryakos Ergün
stating: “These are scary times. We are not sure what to do now.
The State Government can now break down our protective wall and
give a substantial amount of our land to third parties to
cultivate it. Who knows what is next for us. All I know is that
we now live with fear and an insecure future.”
Daniel Gabriel, SUA’s Human Rights and NGO
Director, expands o n this : “While we are pleased that we won
the Treasury case, we are equally concerned by how we lost the
Forestry Case. The court ruling shows us how the Turkish
Government continues to mistreat its minority groups. I
understand that we will appeal this decision to the Court of
Appeal in Ankara. This is just a first step. Recent European
Court of Human Rights decisions have shown us that the EU will
not tolerate such discriminatory decisions by the Turkish State.
On several occasions, the European Union, which Turkey seeks to
join, has called on the Government to return seized properties
to minorities and expand their religious and cultural freedoms.
This is no different.”
Johny Messo, President of the SUA, expressed his
concerns stating: “With the loss of this case, we question the
sincerity of the Turkish State when it claims it intends to
secure the future of the indigenous Aramean people in their
traditional homeland. We surely cannot and will not accept this
remarkable verdict. By all peaceful means, we will intensify the
pressure on Ankara, where the final decisions are taken. I call
upon all politicians and media, and in particular the Turkish
people, to stand united behind the Mor Gabriel Monastery and act
accordingly to uphold justice.”
The SUA again requests all media, human rights
organizations and politicians to increase their public outcry
over the injustice which is faced by the Aramean (Syriac)
people. The victory of the Boundary and Treasury Cases, proves
that international pres sure can affect other cases.
The SUA
will continue to keep you updated in relation to all events
related to these trials. If you require any further information,

Rights and NGO) on +44 7795 602 078 or on

St. Ephrem Universal Syriac Orthodox Medical Mission |
St. Ephrem
Universal Syriac Orthodox Medical Mission

The grand
opening of the Saint Ephrem Universal Syrian Orthodox Medical
Mission, the social ministry of the Universal Syrian Orthodox
Church of Antioch was held at the Saint Ephrem Seminary in
Ma’raat Saidnaya, Damascus, Syria.
A Holy Eucharist was
celebrated July 7th at the St. Ephrem monastery in Ma’arrat
Saidnaya on the occasion of the inauguration of the St. Ephrem
Syriac Orthodox Universal Medical Mission. This historic and
important event was headed by the president of the missionary,
His Eminence Archbishop Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan, Patriarchal
Vicar of the US Western Archdiocese. His Eminence was assisted
by Bishop Mor Gregorius Joseph, Bishop of Trichur in India, and
representative clergy members from different churches.
During the opening ceremony
His Eminence Archbishop Mor C. Eugene Kaplan presented a sermon
in which he stressed upon the agenda of this mission, which
includes; establishing a human medical institution to secure a
healthy, scientific, educational, and servicing organization, in
addition to physicians who would offer their human services free
of charge, adding that this mission will have branches worldwide
and wherever anybody needs this free service. He also added that
it will facilitate the ways by which it could medically educate
people and also eases moral and financial burdens especially
during natural disasters or many other human tragedies.
His Eminence emphasized the
vital role His Holiness Mor Ignatius Zakka 1 Iwas, Patriarch of
Antioch and all the East, the spiritual head of the Universal
Syriac Orthodox Church who has called for greater lay
participation in the life and mission of the Church. His
Holiness expressed his adoption to this new mission in being
spread worldwide in order to bring together the Syriac fabric
through a human institution that offers medical services free of
charge, by securing the needed finance and in supporting the
scientific and educational activities among which offering
medical scholarships for specializing in this human servicing
field.
The Holy Eucharist service
was attended by bishops, priests, and representatives of the
Christian denominations, as well as the Pope’s ambassador in
Damascus, a group of monks, nuns and laity and a number of
physicians who are involved in this field from Damascus, Homs,
and other countries around the world.
During the
Holy Divine Liturgy His Holiness Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius
Zakka I, lit the lamp symbolically to inaugurate the medical
mission organization. In the inaugural address His Holiness
stated the symbolization of the lamp which brightly shines for
others and our
burning and grateful love for God.
Furthermore, His Holiness addressed that this new organization
should reach out to every poor, destitute, deprived and sick
person with help. He said that serving such unprivileged and the
wounded is equal to providing services to Jesus Christ and
following the Scripture teachings.
Soon after, His Holiness lighted the candles in celebration of
the grand opening of this mission worldwide, asking God to bless
this medical work and the Universal Medical Mission for the
benefit of humans and humanity.
It is worth mentioning that
St. Ephrem the Syriac was the first to establish such a wide
spread missionary in the region in the fourth century. And
following in his footsteps and in his blessed name, this mission
carries his name to imitate his work and his sacrifices
universally. He was the first one to raise funds from the
wealthy and purchase homes and provide beds where all plagued
people were gathered in Urhoy (Edessa, Urfa in the modern
Turkey). He himself was later plagued and departed to his Lord
as being a victim to this human service.
At the
banquette that followed the Eucharist, the president of the
Medical Mission, Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan in his welcoming
speech expressed his gratitude to all the attendees. Dignitaries
at the banquet included diplomatic representatives of several
countries:
Deputy Health
Minister of Syria, Apostolic Nuncio, Moramdimi John Baptist;
various church heads, and the Mayor of Damascus attended the
function: Mor Gregorios Joseph, Fr. Babu Peringol, and Dr.
Abraham Edathara who spoke on the goals of the mission. Dr.
Suhail Savaro, Dr. Susan Jacob and Dr. George Hanna spoke on the
social and medical mission pertaining to Christianity, and Lony
Thomas gave the Vote of Thanks.
This inauguration comes after
several meetings that were held on Saturday in St. Ephrem
monastery, blessed by His Holiness the Patriarch Mor Ignatius
Zakka Iwas the supreme patron, and His Beatitude Mor Baselius
Thomas I, the patron of the Mission. The meetings were headed by
His Eminence Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan, the president of the
Mission along with the participation of the executive committee
members of this mission who came from North America, India, and
Europe as a step in supporting the decision of establishing this
mission and apply our Lord Jesus Christ's doctrines of faith
and ethics to medical science and practice throughout the world
for serving humanity.

Joint Clergy Meeting of the Oriental Orthodox Church
On the morning of Thursday,
January 17th, 2008, the Council of Oriental orthodox
Bishops gathered at Holy Cross the Armenian Cathedral in
Montebello to celebrate Divine Liturgy.
The four prelates: His Eminences
Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian and Archbishop Hovan Derderian of the

all together participated in the Holy Divine Liturgy according the rite of

Western Archdiocese Sunday Schools Teachers' Retreat |
Western Archdiocese Sunday Schools Teachers' Retreat
On Saturday, February 9th at St. Mary’s church in the
city of Orange a Sunday School Teacher’s Retreat was held. His
Eminence Archbishop Mor C. Eugene Kaplan presides over this
event, along with Rev. Fr. Louis Yacoub, Rev. Fr. George Touma,
Rev. Fr. John Saif, Rev. Fr. Peter Rouboz, Rev. Fr. Ephrem Adde,
and Rev. Fr. Fadi Yousif. There were teachers representing the
various churches of the Western Diocese. The retreat focused on
the ‘Interpretation of the Syriac Orthodox Divine Liturgy.’
Following the welcoming and opening prayers, Patricia Allaf,
director of the Western Diocese Sunday School Programs, began
the retreat by presenting a number of resources for teachers to
use within their weekly classes. The program of the Western
Diocese currently has a 4-level curriculum that is designed for
students ages 5-12. There are also booklets each of which
focuses on a certain aspect of church doctrines and beliefs.
The clergy and teachers then proceeded to the church to conduct a special
Holy Qurbono (liturgy). This Eucharist service was an educational liturgy
which was segmented into various parts in order to explain the sacred and
ever-important traditions and rituals performed and chanted within the
Syriac Orthodox Liturgy. His Eminence, accompanied by the clergy, recited
the hymns of the weekly service and at the same time, His Eminence would
clarify the meaning of the hand motions and prayers at certain times during
the Eucharist service. The educational liturgy helped teachers gain a better
understanding of the rich, It is important to note that the forms of
worship, the liturgy, the Syriac language, the vestments of the celebrants,
and their holy names proclaim the Antiochian origin of the church.
Our Lord and His disciples spoke in the Aramaic language, of which many
churches celebrate the weekly Divine Liturgy. Liturgy is a symbolic action
which affirms our faith. Faith manifests itself through liturgical gestures.
Therefore, as teachers it is imperative to be able to comprehend the meaning
of the Liturgy in order to properly instruct the children of our Diocese,
the future of our church.
Following the Liturgy, the celebrants and teachers enjoyed lunch and then
held a Question and Answer Session. Certain issues and events were discussed
and organized to help foster the vital and rich foundation of the Sunday
School Programs. The Sunday School Program plans to hold another retreat in
late Spring, which will focus on ‘The Creed.’
The program extends its greatest appreciation to His Eminence for his
presence and most valuable interpretation of the Liturgy. A thank you to all
those who drove long distances to be with us and St. Mary’s Church for
hosting the event.

His Eminence Archbishop
in
High Desert Area |
H. E. Archbishop Mor C. Eugene Kaplan pays pastoral visit to High
Desert Area
On Sunday, February 10th His Eminence, accompanied by Rev. Fr.
Louis Yacoub and Fr. Abdallah Satoof, traveled to the High Desert Area to
conduct the Divine Liturgy. His Eminence, assisted by the parish priest, Fr.
Mtanous Askar, and the other respective attending clergy, conducted the Holy
Eucharist Service.
Many faithful gathered to partake in the Liturgy, and during his
homily His Eminence spoke about Luke chapter 5. In his homily,
His Eminence addressed the following: “We should observe, in
these passages, our Lord Jesus Christ's unwearied readiness for
every good work. Once more we find Him preaching to a
people who "pressed upon Him to hear the word of God." And where
does He preach? Not in any consecrated building, or place set
apart for public worship, but in the open air--not in a pulpit
constructed for a preacher's use, but in a fisherman's boat.
Being a true disciple involves a way of life; a way of life with
Jesus at the centre. This is one of the things we mean when we
say Jesus is Lord. It means that we re-orient and re-pattern our
lives around following Jesus.”
The Divine Liturgy was followed by a community luncheon where everyone
enjoyed an afternoon of food and refreshments. The Archbishop offered words
of praise to the parents and children of the community, and exhorted the
parish for its diligent work and accomplishments. His Eminence thanked the
community for their hospitality and warmth, encouraging them to continue
cultivating their love for one another.

Christmas Message of H. E.
Archbishop Mor C. Eugene Kaplan |
Christmas Message of H. E. Archbishop Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan
“In the beginning was the Word, and
the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with
God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that
was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men… And the Word
became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of
the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
(John
1:1)
Beloved Faithful in
Christ;
There is no one in history that has been
given more names or titles than Jesus Christ. Throughout the pages of the
Holy Bible over 100 names and titles are given to Jesus, for example, He was
called “the Bright morning star, Wonderful Counselor, Alpha and Omega, the
lamb of God…” Each of these names or titles has its own rich meaning. There
is no person in history who had been given more names and titles than Jesus
Christ. Throughout all generations, Christ was identified with distinguished
position.
But there is not any name that is more
indicative of His birth in flesh than “Immanuel.” This name that was
mentioned in the gospel of Matthew (Matthew 1:21-23) is clearly the same
name mentioned in the prophecy of Isaiah who first called Him “Immanuel.” It
was 753 years before His birth in flesh, that the prophet Isaiah stated: “Therefore
the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and
bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14), and he
continued his prophecy on this Child saying: “For unto us a Child is
born. Unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting
Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6). And this very special Christmas
name, as Matthew tells us, in the Aramaic Language means "God is with us."
He is the only One worthy to be called “Immanuel, God
is
with us”. His birth was eternal salvation to all mankind from sin and death.
The New-Born of Mary, who was born in a
manger, for whom shepherds came to see and wise men to travel hundreds of
miles to worship, is the real Immanuel, God is with us. What does the name
‘Immanuel, God with us’ truly imply?
We ask ourselves, wasn’t God always with
the human race? Wasn’t God “with us” before the coming of Jesus? Yes He was,
because God, the Creator, has always been with His creation, contrary to
false gods and atheists and many who believe in a god who created the world
then departed far away. But the true God has always been with us. In this
regard, God says in the book of Jeremiah 23:23,24: “Am
I a God near at Hand” says the
Lord, and “not a God afar off?...
Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” The God of the Holy Bible, the
True Creator, is omnipresent, everywhere at the same time, whose presence
fills all creations, mountains, hills, oceans, and every piece of land on
earth, yet, He is not a part of His creation. He is still the Creator who is
known by His creatures. Since God is omnipresent, everywhere, then He is
certainly present amongst us and with us.
But with the birth of Jesus in flesh, in
Bethlehem, Immanuel takes on a new meaning. The Newborn Baby Immanuel is
with us not only to bless us, nor is He with us in the sense that He is
going to only work through Jesus to help us, protect us, or guide us. No,
the Babe Lord Jesus who laid in a manger is “God
with us” because He is the
true God.
What made the shepherds return to their
fields rejoicing? What made the wise men fall down in wonder and worship the
Baby of the manger? Isn’t it because they recognized they were in the
presence of God who appeared in flesh! Yes, it was the gripping realization
that they were in the presence of their Creator who was made man.
Years later St. John the Evangelist under
the inspiration of the Holy Spirit would write the perfect commentary on the
Christmas events. He states in the beginning of his gospel: "In the
beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He
was in the beginning with God; and all things were made through Him, and
without Him nothing was made that was made...And the Word became flesh and
dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten
of the Father, full of grace and truth" (John 1:1-3, 14).
The true message of Christmas is one to
stagger the imagination: The Second Person of the Holy Trinity, the only
begotten Son of the Father, the eternal Word, our Creator wills to clothe
Himself in our nature, and to become man, our brother, one of us. God
Himself lies in the manger, completely human, completely Divine. So the
message of Christmas is that God is with us in the Person of Baby Jesus.
Why does the human race need Immanuel
(God is
with us)? It is because our sin had separated ourselves far away from Him as
it had been written by the prophet Isaiah 59. "But your iniquities have
made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His
face from you, so that He does not hear." These words were spoken
originally to the covenant people of Israel, but they apply to all who have
sinned against the Creator. In one place it is written, "If we say we
have no sin we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us." (1 John
1:8). And in the book of Psalm it is written: "The Lord has looked down
from heaven upon the sons of men, to see if there are any who understand,
who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become
corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one" (Psalm 14:2-3).
That is why we need "Immanuel, God is
with us" Jesus Christ, Only He can undo what we have done. Only the One who
created us in the first place can restore us again. Only our Creator can
break down the wall of sin that separates His creatures from Him. Only He
can give their lives the meaning and perfection they were supposed to have.
Only "God with us" can rescue us from the oblivion that we are heading
toward.
And that is what the eternal Word (Son)
of God decided to do. For He saw the dire need of restore that the human
race was in. He saw the ugliness, the brutality, and the violence that sin
bred in man. He saw the emptiness and the restlessness of creatures in
rebellion against their Creator. He saw that death reigned like a
cold-hearted tyrant over His creation. Most of all He saw that His creation
which had once been so beautiful, was now marred and vandalized almost
beyond repair by corruption of sin; and that everything was heading for
everlasting condemnation.
And so God the Son, who was sent by God
the Father, sprang into action. He knew that according to the Law set by God
the Father, man must die for his sin. He also was well aware that man could
not be restored to His Creator until the Law was kept perfectly and sin was
done away with. But because He loved His creation so much that He did not
want them to perish, the eternal Word of God decided to die in flesh in
order to give life to His creation. And to fulfill this decision, He had to
become human and take flesh. And thus, 2000 years ago, “when the fullness of
the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the
law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the
adoption as sons.” (Galatians 4:4,5). And thus the Word became flesh and
became Immanuel, Jesus Christ.
Because of His great love for His fallen
human race, He left His glory and made Himself of no reputation, came to our
world taking our dead form in order to give us life. Through His blameless
perfect life and by His death on the cross, He wrecked, broke down the wall
of separation that our sin had built, and reconciled us to God His Father;
as it is written: “God was in
Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses to
them.” (2 Cor. 5:19) So,
through Jesus Christ, Immanuel, our sins were forgiven and we were
reconciled again with our Creator.
By this name, Immanuel, the whole human
race gets its need to fulfill God’s plan of salvation. How lucky and blessed
we are for Jesus Christ has come and became Immanuel, God is with us.
On the blessed occasion of the birth of
our Savior and Redeemer Immanuel Jesus Christ, in flesh, we offer our
warmest felicitations to our highly esteemed holy father Mor Ignatius Zakka
I, Iwas, Patriarch of Antioch and all the East, supreme head of the
Universal Syriac Orthodox Church, asking the Lord to keep him healthy and
prolong his life, and we congratulate all eminences of the church, the
shepherds of all Archdioceses worldwide as well, especially the faithful of
our Western USA Archdiocese, clergy, deacons, parish councils, institutions,
parishioners, and our whole faithful Syriac people in general.
May the Holy Baby shower His blessings
upon you through Christmas, and may He bestow upon your upcoming feasts and
New Year His joy, health, and tranquility. May His grace be with you all.
Amen.

His Eminence Archbishop in
Arizona |
H. E. Archbishop Mor C. Eugene Kaplan pays pastoral visit to Arizona
community
On Friday, December 14th His
Eminence, accompanied by deacon Gabriel, traveled to Arizona to visit the
Syriac Orthodox community for the weekend to celebrate the Divine Liturgy
and establish a New Parish Council to serve the needs of the parish, the New
Parish Council will take place in the first week of the New Year of 2008.
Throughout the weekend His Eminence

visiting many families, conveying his prayers and best wishes for all.
On Sunday many faithful gathered to
partake in the Liturgy, and during his homily His Eminence spoke about the '
Revelation to Joseph.' In his oration, His Eminence reflected upon Joseph,
focusing on seven aspects about the man into whose care our God entrusted
his very own Son, and a man of whom we can learn many things from. In his
homily, His Eminence spoke about Joseph's character: "Joseph was a righteous
man, committed to God's commandments. He had no fear or shame of his
commitment. Joseph is an example to every man: Do not be afraid to be a man
of prayer, in union with God, surrendered completely to God's Will, avoiding
evil and doing good."

St. Paul Young Adult Fellowship Group
|
A Message from the San Diego St. Paul Young Adult Fellowship Group
St. Paul’s
Young Adult Fellowship Group participated in their first meeting in the
English language with Reverend Father Fadi Yousif on Wednesday December 5,
2007 in El Cajon. The group, led by Father Fadi, discussed the role of
Christianity in multi-cultural societies. Group collaboration led us to
discover that there are many different types of societies in the world, and
religious views and freedoms are expressed differently in each. Often times
Church is viewed as a separate from society, but we learned that Church is
actually a part of society. God is a Way of Life and in life we should show
our love and commitment to God so that others may be inspired by our Faith.

H. E. Archbishop Mor C. Eugene Kaplan invited to celebrate special
service in Canada on the occasion of retirement of H.E. Mor T. Ephrem Aboudi
His Eminence Archbishop Mor C. Eugene Kaplan traveled to Canada
for the very special and blessed occasion held in honor of H.E.
Archbishop Mor Timotheos Ephraim Aboudi, who has completed his
religious and administrative labor in the blessed Archdiocese of
Canada as a Patriarchal Vicar. Numerous Eminences and respective
clergy attended this memorable event which was held in the city
of Montreal.
In his sermon, H.E. Archbishop Mor C. Eugene Kaplan spoke of his
blessed brother in Christ. “It gives me a great pleasure on this
blessed day of honoring my brother, Archbishop Mor T. Ephrem
Aboudi. He completed his
church administrative duties according to the constitution of
our Syrian Orthodox church, but he is constantly striving to
reach the Christian perfection. He fought since his childhood
for the salvation of his soul and others since the day he became
a monk, and he wasn’t seduced by the high ranks of the church
for he carried the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God
according to St. Paul.”
His Eminence spoke of his brother in Christ as the good fighter
which is a soldier for Christ. H.E. Arch. Mor C. Eugene Kaplan
continued, “He labors with other spiritual fighters and with the
angels to defeat the devil. He carries the Lord’s weapons and
learns how to use them. St. Paul says: “Put on the whole
armor of God.” Among God’s armor are: The shield of faith,
the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, and
the sword of the spirit which is the word of God. (Ephesians 6,
and 1 Thess. 5)”
His Eminence Arch. Mor C. Eugene Kaplan concluded his sermon
wishing his brother in Christ, His Eminence Arch. Mor T. Ephrem
Aboudi, a life full of happiness, health, spiritual wealth and

the weekend of June 23-25 students from various Sunday School programs
joined together for a spiritual retreat. The camp was under the auspices of
H.E. Archbishop C. Eugene Kaplan and the following respective clergy: Rev.
Fr. John Saif (our spiritual advisor), Rev. Fr. Louis Yacoub, Rev. Fr.
Andrew Bahhy, Rev. Fr. Peter Rouboz, and very Rev. Raban Matta Khoury, our
special guest from the Monastery of St. Ephrem in Ma'arat Saidnaya, Syria.
The theme of the retreat was The “The
Bread of Life ”ONE MISSION: GET
IT, GOT IT, GIVE IT "Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the
life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
John 14:6
On Friday His Eminence presented a very
beneficial PowerPoint Lecture focusing on the theme of the camp retreat. His
Eminence spoke about the importance of spiritual life and that only ‘God is
the Source of Life.’ Following the lecture a question and answer session was
held with His Eminence. The celebrants and students then enjoyed a campfire
and recited Syriac hymns and roasted marshmallows, which concluded the
wonderful evening.
On Saturday a full program was
scheduled for the students. The morning began with a lecture presented by
Rev. Fr. John Saif in our meeting room. The lecture also focused on the
Gospel of John chapter 14 verse 6. In his lecture Fr. John Saif focused on
the way children can follow Christ: repentance, helping the poor, reading
the Holy Bible, and praying and taking Holy Communion. The students were
then placed in groups to work on their camp journals. Each student received
a journal that was based on the theme and also the recreational activities.
The students then enjoyed a morning of basketball, volleyball, water-gun
fights, and football. Following lunch, the students had the entire afternoon
to use the numerous activities available: climbing wall, zip-line, swimming
pool, skateboard ramp, ping-pong, and soccer. Prior to dinner, evening
hymns were recited with Rev. Fr. John Saif and very Rev. Raban Matta. We
also celebrated Chris Elyas’ birthday and we thank his parents who brought
cake, sweets, and refreshments. The evening concluded with many students

together in His name. We also thank the following teachers who were a
tremendous joy to be with: Lina Ibrahim, Mary Saado, and Janet Malki, Sunday

Divine Liturgy of the Ascension
|
“Ascension of the Lord”
Sunday
June 4, 2006
His Eminence celebrated the Divine Liturgy of the Ascension
On Sunday, June 4, 2006,
during the Feast of the Ascension of Christ, His Eminence
Archbishop C. Eugene Kaplan, presided over Divine Liturgy at St.
Ephraim Cathedral, assisted by Rev. Fr. Louis Yacoub.
In his sermon, regarding to the gifts of
the ascension, His Eminence said "...Every
Christian having the gift of Christ in his measure, is bound to
use it for the general good; for in a body no joint or member
exists for itself, but for the good of the whole. You, whether
you have much grace or little, must, according to the effectual
working in you, supply your part to the increase of the body
unto the edifying of itself in love. See that ye regard your
gifts in this light; trace them to Christ, and then use them for
the purpose which He designed them for you...."
and he continued in his
sermon saying:"...Then come the Shepherds, pastors and
teachers, doing one work in different forms. These are sent
to feed the flock; they abide in one place, and instruct
faithful who have been gathered in the house of God—these also
are invaluable gifts of the ascension of Jesus Christ. It is not
given unto all men to be shepherds and pastors, nor is it
needed; for if all were shepherds, where is the flock? Those to
whom this grace is especially given are fit to lead and instruct
the people of God, and this leadership is much required. What
would the church be without leaders chosen by God? Let those who
have tried to do without be a warning to you. That’s why St.
Ignatius Theophorus (bearer of God) the III Patriarch of Antioch
said in his epistle: “Without bishop, there is no church...."

9th Archdiocese Annual Meeting
|
Archdiocese Annual Meeting
Saturday
May 27, 2006
On Saturday, May 27, 2006,
the clergy and delegates of the Parish Councils of the Churches
of the Western Archdiocese met at St Ephraim Cathedral under the
auspices of H.E. Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan, and in response to
his invitation, for their 9th Archdiocese annual
meeting.
The meeting started with
prayer and reading of the gospel. Afterward His Eminence
reported the situation of the Archdiocese and the churches, then
he called for unity and to for all churches to work hand in hand
to improve the Archdiocese and its institutions.
Among the discussed items on
the Agenda are:
+ The Administrative
committee report was presented by Elias Danho along with the
financial statement as of December 31, 2005. This report
included a breakdown of all the Archdiocese Revenues and
Expenditures.
+ Sabro: The difficulties in
meeting deadlines are increasingly due to delays in receiving
articles and announcements from the Churches. Each priest is
encouraged to submit his Church’s news in a timely fashion. The
other issue involving Sabro is its cost of production which far
exceeds its income. Although all agree that Sabro should
continue in its present quarterly format, ways to raise income
are discussed. Some form of advertisement could be added.
Pictures of announced events could be added and charged for
(Baptism, wedding, graduation….) the priests in each Parish will
ask the involved parishioner whether they want a picture of the
event in Sabro and could suggest a donation amount.
+ Directory: As a large
“Ticket Item” the benefit of the directory in its present form
is debated. It does take a great deal of effort to produce,
mainly in coordination efforts with the other archdioceses and
their respective Churches. On the financial part it does cover
its expenses. It is suggested to extend the usability of the
printed edition to 3-5 years as opposed to 2 years. It is
pointed that even at this rate the changes every 2 years are
pretty significant. In conclusion, as there is no financial
downside to the directory as it is done now, we will maintain
this formula and investigate better ways.
+ The printing of the
calendar will proceed as last year’s. Each Church will be
responsible to provide a cover for one month (The Church
Namesake Holiday if possible). A deadline of the end of August
is needed to ensure the Calendar’s availability before the New
Year.
+ Discussion of the by-laws:
With no changes to the proposed draft being made, after last
year’s extension, the by-laws are adopted by unanimous vote.
They go in effect on this same day. These replace any older
version. Any correction or change can be done by presenting a
motion of change to the Archdiocese Council where it can be
discussed and decided upon.
+ The Western Archdiocese
Convention: The steering committee for this year’s convention
was not able to organize a convention for this year for many
reasons. After discussion it is decided to try the concept by
starting with Churches. St Paul’s Church in San Diego offered in
principle to hold the next convention. Should San Diego
decline, St. Mary’s Church will hold the convention in Orange
County.
+ As part of restructuring
the Archdiocese and its institutions the Sunday School and Youth
organizations will be under the Archdiocese umbrella. Unified
programs and study guidelines as well as guidance and support
will be made available for all Churches to follow.
+ Priests for Parishes: The
availability of Monks being limited and the best way for any
Parish to flourish being to have their own married priest,
parishes are encouraged to move in that direction as soon as
they can do it. St. Paul’s Church in San Diego seems to be at
this stage and is strongly encouraged to look for a permanent
priest.
+ Administrative Committee:
The need to increase the members of this committee is discussed.
It is agreed to increase the number by three new members, one
from each of the local Churches to be determined through
discussions of H. E. with the appropriate Church.
After discussing other items
regarding some churches of the Western Archdiocese, the meeting
was adjourned with prayer.

Meeting of the Orthodox Leaders

“Fellowship meeting of the Orthodox Leaders”
Tuesday
May 16, 2006
Communiqué of the fellowship of Orthodox Bishops
concerning the
"Da Vinci Code" and the "Gospel of Judas"
A fellowship of Orthodox Bishops was hosted
by His Grace Joseph Zahlawi (bishop of Los Angeles and all the
West for the Antiochian Orthodox Church) on May 16, 2006, in the
presence of His grace Bishop Serapion (Coptic Orthodox Church),
His Eminence Archbishop Mor C. Eugene Kaplan (Syriac Orthodox
Church), His Eminence Archbishop Moushegh Mardirosian (Armenian
apostolic Church), His Eminence Hovnan Derderian (Armenian
Church of Atchmiazeen).
During the fellowship, the topics of "Da
Vinci Code" and the "Gospel of Judas" were discussed.
In conclusion to the discussion, it was decided that this
fellowship communiqué be distributed among the Faithful.
"We as Orthodox bishops caution our
faithful about the movie "Da Vinci Code" which falsifies
the reality of our Lord Jesus Christ. Based on fiction and
falsehood, this movie tries to discredit the fundamentals of our
Christian Orthodox faith, and to attack the authenticity of the
New Testament.
Also we caution our faithful about the "Gospel
of Judas" This "gospel" better entitled the Judas
Document, is neither "good news" (the meaning of "gospel")
nor was it written by Judas Iscariot nor is it even particularly
"new". This ancient manuscript was roundly condemned and refuted
by the early Church Fathers.
In the midst of the media relentless
avalanche of anti-Christian propaganda concerning our Lord Jesus
Christ, we are confident that you are standing firm in your
Orthodox faith. Battling for our Apostolic Faith, which bears
the Truth of Who Jesus Christ is, we must remain undismayed by
attacks that the media launches against the accuracy and
veracity of the four Gospels."

at the Crystal Cathedral. H.E. Archbishop Mor Clemis Eugene
Kaplan, Rev. Fr. Louis Yacoub, Rev. Fr. Peter Rouboz, Rev. Fr.
John Saif, and V. Rev. Raban Andrew Bahhi along with two hundred
and seventy-five faithful parishioners representing various

event. The largest and most spectacular passion play is brought
to life through exciting drama, song and pageantry. The play
recreates the story of Passion Week including the triumphal
entry into Jerusalem, Jesus cleansing the temple, the Last
Supper, the trial, Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension.
Flying angels soar overhead while live animals parade down the
aisles. The passion play is an exciting interpretation of the
week that changed the course of history forever.
We
would like to thank all the faithful who attended from far distance.

September 13-16, 2005
Celebrating the 25th anniversary of
his enthronement on the venerable See of Antioch, as
the 122nd Patriarch of Antioch, Mor Ignatius Zakka
Iwas is one of only fifteen who have held the
patriarchal office for an entire quarter of a
century. His two immediate predecessors, Mor
Ignatius Aphrem Barsaum and Mor Ignatius Ya`qub III,
were patriarchs for, respectively, 24 years and 23
years. All three have lived through times of
momentous change which have required great wisdom on
the part of leaders of all the Church leaders;
without any doubt one can say that all three
patriarchs, each in his own special way, has shown
great wisdom in guiding the Syriac Orthodox Church
through these turbulent times. His Holiness is, of
course, linked to his two predecessors in a special
way, having been personal patriarchal secretary to
Mor Aphrem Barsaum, and having been ordained priest
by Patriarch Mor Ya`qub III.
On this auspicious occasion of the
Patriarchal Silver Jubilee of His Holiness’
enthronement, his eminence Mor C. Eugene Kaplan
accompanied by some of the
parishioners of the Western Archdiocese,
have met His Holiness and expressed their great appreciation, for
all that His Holiness has achieved in this past
quarter century. We pray to the Almighty God to
give His Holiness a long life with good health to
lead the church of God in true faith and traditions.
We join the Syriac people worldwide in wishing his
holiness shnayo sagi’otho (many more years in his
leadership)! See

blessing the Sunday School 2nd Bible Bowl Competition
August 27, 2005
The Sunday
School 2nd Bible Bowl Competition was held on
Saturday, August 27 in the Cathedral Hall. His
eminence Archbishop Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan, accompanied with Rev. Fr. Louis
Yacoub, attended the competition and blessed it by prayer.
Mrs. Patricia Allaf the blessed director of St. Ephraim
Cathedral Sunday School, welcomed all
families who came to
encourage their children in this competition and she thanked everyone who
came to support his child and said: only hope the word of God continues to
grow in their hearts. They are the future of our church and with a good
solid religious foundation we pray our church will continue to prosper and
flourish with these bright students.
The evening began with
the younger division which are students 5-9 years old.
Twelve students were placed in three teams and were
asked 11 questions each. To our delight all three
teams scored all 33 questions correct! As a reward
all the students received trophies for their
dedication and knowledge of the Holy Bible.
Upper Division
After a short break for
dinner and refreshments it was time for the older
students (ages 9-15) to began their rounds of
questions. The students were placed in seven teams of
four students each. Each team was given a name related
to the Holy Bible and fifteen seconds to answer each
question. After all the questions were asked The
Gospel Team came out with the highest number of
points followed by the The Prophets team who
were only a point behind. In God's eyes all the
students were winners. It is very rewarding to have
such dedicated students. After tallying all
the answers this division answered 85 out of 104
questions correct. That is a 81% percentile score. His
Eminence praised the students for their hard work and
effort and thus their teachers.
All students were
rewarded certificates of participation. Winning teams were given
trophies.
Parents vs. Students
We then had a little
surprise for the parents. It had prepared a round of
questions for a short fun game of Parents vs.
Students. Each team was given five questions to answer
and in the end the Parent team won! Although the
students dispute this!!!
Truly everyone is a
winner!!
It was so blessed
evening for all. His Eminence gave thank to everyone who
came, helped and donated items, and special thanks and
blessing to Mrs. Patricia Allaf who did many efforts to make this
competition done, God bless them all.

August 21, 2005
On the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin
Mary, Sunday, August 21, 2005 His Eminence Mor C. Eugene Kaplan,
Archbishop of the Western Archdiocese of US, celebrated Divine Liturgy and
delivered the Sermon at St. Mary Malankara Syriac Orthodox Church in
Whittier.
During his Sermon the Archbishop reflected
upon the Feast of the Assumption, with the words, “Because Enoch walked with
God, God took him into heaven (Gen. 5: 24), Elijah also ascended with
chariot and horses of fire (2 Kings 2:11) and the face of Moses was shining
because he remained in the presence of God for forty days, and since a place
had been prepared in heaven for the apostles, so how much more glory and
splendor must the Virgin Mary hold because she carried the incarnate God
nine months in her womb, and became a throne of God! That holy throne
shouldn’t be buried but rather taken to a place worthy of its sanctity, to
heaven....The Blessed Virgin Mary is a leading a true example of Motherhood
both for our Mother Church of Antioch and all our mothers.”
After Divine Liturgy His Eminence was invited to a special
Dinner
held in honor of His Eminence at the hall of the church gathered our

Archdiocese 8th Annual General Meeting |
Archdiocese 8th annual general meeting
May 7, 2005
On Saturday, May 7, 2005, the clergy and
delegates of the Parish Councils of the Churches of the Western Archdiocese
met at St Ephraim Cathedral under the auspices of H.E. Mor Clemis Eugene
Kaplan, and in response to his invitation, for their 8th annual
meeting.
After morning prayers, the meeting
started promptly at 10 o’clock with readings from the New Testament.
H.E. started the meeting with a review of
the situation as it presented on this day. He noted the absence of many
church representatives and reiterated that the Archdiocese meetings are
mandatory and that every church is required to send 2 members of its board,
along with the parish priest, to this annual meeting which is held on the
Saturday after Easter at St. Ephraim’s Cathedral. Short of notice of change
the meeting is considered to be ongoing.
He then reported on the last
extraordinary Synod Council held in Damascus and the resolutions adopted:
1.
Patriarchal
vicars for Argentina and Zahle
2.
The situation of
the Church in India
3.
Ecumenical
concerns
4.
The
reorganization of the Archdiocese of Central Europe by the end of December
2006
5.
Issue of the
United States Western Archdiocese.
The recommendations are made and forwarded to the parties involved for
consideration:
6.
Next ordinary
Synod meeting to be held in
Damascus 9-12 September, 2005.
7.
Silver
Anniversary of the seating of H. H. Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas as Patriarch,
to be held in Ma’aret Saydnaya starting on
September 3-4, 2005 and culminating with
festivities on 13-14 September, 2005.
Discussions of items on the Agenda
followed:
·
The minutes of
the previous meeting were adopted with corrections.
·
The
Administrative committee report was presented along with the Financial
statement as of December 31,
2004.
·
Discussion of the
by-laws: With no corrections to the proposed draft being made it is
suggested to adopt them as presented. Objections ensued. There will be
another opportunity for all churches to review the proposed by-laws and
suggest corrections. These should be referred to the secretary of the
Archdiocese Council, Dr. Sami Hamamji, via the Archdiocese offices, as soon
as possible. The presented By-Laws will be considered final and adopted at
the next meeting if no amendment is received.
·
The annual North
American Convention: This tradition does not seem to be of any help in the
conduct of the Archdiocese matters since each one of the three Archdioceses
has its own concerns and sets of issues that are essentially irrelevant to
the other two. In view of that it was proposed and adopted that the Western
Archdiocese has its own annual convention to be held in the beginning for
one day only and later to be expanded according to the needs and the
response. A steering committee is set to organize next year’s convention.
Two delegates from each of the local churches will form this committee.
Printing committee: The
task of handling printed material in the Archdiocese is delegated to a
committee that will be responsible to collect all material that will go into
Sabro and finalize, edit, print and distribute the magazine. This committee
will also handle the Directory printing as well as the Annual Calendar. The
budget of this committee will come from the ads it sells, the payments for
the directory and calendar and the donations it can collect. The
Archdiocese will cover shortfalls. The committee will ensure that these are
kept as low as possible.
Annual Archdiocese
Party: Gabriel Gelin suggested having the annual party coincide with a very
large party he is arranging with the presence of a famous Turkish singer.
The proceeds of the entire party will go to the Archdiocese. Many opinions
were given in favor and against this proposition. After discussion it was
voted to accept Mr. Gelin’s offer.
There being no further
discussion, the meeting is adjourned.
